Do you need long curtain ideas? Do you need to purchase curtains on a budget? If you love the appearance of long cottage curtains but find them too costly, here’s what you need to know to attain that “look” on a budget. You may think, “These must be drop-cloth curtains,” but that is not the case!
Dressing Room-Office Long Cottage Curtains
Everyone knows buying curtains for your home can be pricey.! Especially if you want the luxury of them puddling on the floor. We have 22 windows in our “new” 1840’s timber home that we are renovating. I knew I would have to think of something, or we would never have curtains on every window for quite a while.
Flat Twin Sheets
You would never guess that these long cottage curtains are 100% cotton white twin sheets, yes, I said twin sheets! Everyone that comes to visit at our cottage cannot tell that they are sheets. Everyone just assumes that they are curtains. Of course, they are so surprised to find out that they are just ordinary twin flat sheets.
Master Bedroom Long Cottage Curtains
Right now, it is the end of April, spring is in the air the birds are chirping and all the beautiful flowers are budding and blooming. So now is the time to get busy in the cottage and the floral gardens. Time to open the windows and watch the long cotton curtains billow in the wind!
Master Bedroom-Cottage Curtains on Pine Floors
Do you love and adore long and lengthy white curtains? Just seeing them puddling on the floor, and the beautiful white cotton material against the antique pine floors makes me feel so Happy! So Elegant and Timeless!
Measurements of Twin Flat Sheets
The great thing about them being twin flat sheets would be the size. Twin flat sheets are usually 66″ wide by 96″ long. That is A LOT of material for such a low price. Have you priced fabric lately? You are definitely getting your money’s worth!
If you have very large windows then you could buy full, queen, or king flat sheets, as an option. Just remember to measure your windows. For my French doors I used 4 flat sheets, but it probably would have been better just getting 2 full size sheets. For most normal windows twin flat sheets should be just fine.
Living Room Long Cottage Curtains
You might ask why would any sane person use twin sheets for curtains? Well, there are several reasons, besides the fact that they are budget friendly.
Cottage Curtain and Timber Beams
The white cottage curtains look so simple amongst the dark timber beams. I just love how white works with literally everything. Classic and timeless!
What do Long Cottage Curtains Cost
First of all, they are affordable. Although when I first started purchasing them from Walmart, they were only $5.00 each. That means a set of “curtains” came to $10.00. They are now $10.00 each, so now a set runs you about $20.00. But as anyone knows long curtains are expensive!
Where do you find your budget friendly curtains? Of course, thrift stores are a good option, but if your heart’s desire is that they all match and that you have a cohesive look, then finding 44 curtain panels that match would probably never happen.
No Sewing or Ironing
Most of the wrinkles will fall out in time, or you can wash them but dry only one panel at a time. As soon as the dryer is done hang the dried panel on your cute little curtain clips This will remove most of the wrinkles. If you have a steamer (which I bought one off of Facebook marketplace) you can use that. As you can guess I never ended up getting the steamer out of the box to use on the curtain panels. But maybe one day…Do you iron or steam your curtains? You are a better woman then I am!
Curtain Rods and Curtain Clips
You can choose to leave your cottage curtains just as they are, long and flowing. Or, if you are busy like I am and like most of us are, then this is the way to go. Super simple! Just get some curtain rings and cute curtain rods and you will be good to go.
Options for your Cottage Curtains
These window hangings are so versatile. The possibilities are endless. with this budget friendly choice. If you want your cottage curtains shorter simply fold the sheet at the top and it will give you the look of an attached valance. You could always pleat them on top and add curtain hooks for a more traditional look or hook the curtain hooks into the rings for a more traditional and modern look all in one.
Ribbon Tie Backs
For an Elegant Cottage look tie back the curtain panel with velvet ribbon! You can change out your ribbons depending on the season. Definitely going to be doing this at Christmas Time!
Tassels…naturally tassels make an excellent tie back. I can’t believe I did not think about that!
Deena from Graceful Living uses tassels everywhere. Her video reminded me of that…and out to the store I went!
Does anyone have any other ideas for using sheets for curtains? I was thinking Tablecloth!
Non-White Cottage Curtain Options
If you are not a fan of “all white curtains”, then you could always dye them a custom color to match your decor. Or if you love “color” twin sheets also come in so many lovely patterns as well, no matter what your style. You can find cottage and floral, modern and trendy.
Grandkids Room-Long Cottage Curtains
Surprisingly, even though these curtains puddle on the floor, there has never been a problem with them being stepped on even in the grandkids room! So, if you have little kids, go for it!
If you are still not sold on the idea, what have you got to lose? Just go grab a couple of flat sheets and test it out. You might just be surprised!
So, with a little imagination you can quickly get all your windows covered and have beautiful, long cottage curtains on a budget! Happy Shopping!
